Haines City Senior Swim Program Enhances Health, Well-being of Older Adults

PacSana Founders Want to Transform Elderly Care

Despite the chilly, crisp Spring morning, a large number of senior citizens visited Janet J. in Haines City, the Smith Aquatic Facility. The Senior Citizen Swim Program of the City is where they are participating.

“You don’t even realize you’ve accomplished so much in that hour because it moves so quickly. It’s just so fun and it’s easy on the joints,” said Sandra Cox.

Senior citizens have access to the water aerobics class twice per week. Older adults (65 and over) are exempt. The price is $20 for those who are 55 to 64 years old.

City lifeguard John Sirmons has retired. The senior is now teaching the water aerobics class on a volunteer basis, and he claims it has been a big hit.

“There were perhaps 7-8 people present when this class began. By the time we finished the class last year, we had 30-35 people here,” Sirmons said.

Classes in water aerobics can enhance joint mobility, muscle strength, and heart health. There is less wear and tear on the joints when exercising in water because it is largely impact-free.

“They feel a whole lot better as far as moving, their endurance, and some of them even lost some weight,” Sirmons said.

Joint friendliness can make a big difference in someone’s ability to stay active or not move at all.

“Some of the ladies who came in with canes were walking out without them by the time the program was over. So, it’s been a big help to a lot of people, and they really enjoy coming in here,” said Sirmons.
